Starting a new podcast is not for the faint of heart. There are so many things I have to do before I even get to talk to my first guest. I have to come up with a name that reflects my unique niche. I have to create show art that adheres to strict requirements. I have to write a show description, create an intro and outro, record a trailer episode that explains the show, decide which site will host the episodes, and determine which platforms to distribute them to.
But wait; there’s more. Once the show is approved, I have to source guests. I have to find them through various sites, reach out, make sure they’ve got what it takes to be a great guest, prepare the show’s hook, write the guest’s bio, decide on my questions, and schedule the session.
Once the show is over, I really have to kick it into gear. I have to edit the audio, load the finished podcast, write a summary, create show notes, load the artwork, edit the video, and upload that finished for both the audio and video.
I’m still, I’m not done, because I have a lot to do once the release date rolls around, but I think you get the point; there are a lot of things I have to do to get this podcast up and running. But I’m guessing I don’t see these tasks quite as daunting as you might. That’s because I try to make a habit of changing one really important word. It sits in a phrase I’ve already repeated nine times. The phrase was “I have to…” and the word is have.
It’s funny what that one word does to a thought. The more I said it, the sorrier you might have felt for me. “Oh, poor Rob. Look at all the things he has to do for his podcast.” The funny thing is, if you say “I have to” enough, it won’t just be others who feel sorry for you; you’ll start feeling sorry for you too.
The truth is, I don’t want anyone feeling sorry for me, because of the one word I try my hardest to replace in that phrase:
I don’t have to; I want to.
I’ve been looking to pivot into The Presentation Whisperer Show and its unique niche for years. I want to make this show a success, and to do that, I need to do the groundwork that’s required. So many others may not have the knowledge, equipment, connections, or time that I have. This isn’t about something I have to do; it’s about something I want to do. In fact, I’m feeling so lucky and blessed, I’m thinking of adding another secret word to help me along:
I get to do this.
The next time you start feeling overwhelmed… maybe even a little sorry for yourself, try swapping out those words. It makes the task at hand a whole lot sweeter.
