Almost seventeen years ago, I started writing something I refused to call a blog. The truth is, I’ve never liked blogs. Too many of the ones I read were long on story and short on value; no clear message, and no answer to the most important question I’ve built my career around: W.I.F.M. (“What’s in it for me?”) In sales, you’ve got about 30 seconds to answer that question. In a presentation, maybe two minutes. Miss it, and you lose the room. From the start, my issue with blogs was simple: too many lost sight of the most important person… the reader.
Still, writers need to stay sharp, and I appreciated the discipline required, so, on August 5, 2010, I decided to give it a try, but on my terms. Every piece would provide a personal touch, be message-driven, and usually under 750 words. And there was one final rule: I would never call this a blog, or myself a blogger. Instead, I combined the structure of a blog with the substance of an article and trademarked my own word for it; a Blarticle®. Webster’s Dictionary still doesn’t recognize it as a word… yet, but the Urban Dictionary does!
BLArticle® – noun
: a hybrid between a blog and an article – a concise, impactful piece of writing that delivers meaningful insights in a way that is both engaging and educational – in 750 words or less.
For the record, I didn’t trademark the word Blarticle® to keep people from using it. I just didn’t want to spend decades creating this version of writing, only to have another company trademark the word and force me to stop using it. I invite you to use the word Blarticle® any time you’d like. Just put a “®” after the word.
That brings me to this moment. I’m not saying goodbye to the Blarticle® because every two weeks I’ll still be posting, but I’ll be posting pieces from the past. I’ve got over 500 of them, so I have plenty to pick from. I might even sneak a new one in now and then, just to see if you’re paying attention!
Why the change? In case you didn’t know it, I’ve been quietly embracing the world of podcasting. Six years ago, I started a podcast called Pocket Sized Pep Talks. I’ve hosted over 500 of those shows, and some of them might sound a bit familiar to you because a handful of them are actually Blarticles®. If you ever want to hear some of your favorite Blarticles® read by yours truly, listen in every Wednesday and you’ll get your wish.
But that’s not all. This final pivot involves a new podcast, The Presentation Whisperer Show that’s bringing me back to my roots, and I’m asking you to do is join me. After more than 40 years on stage as a professional speaker, trainer, emcee, actor, singer, juggler, and licensed auctioneer, I’ve learned that great presenting isn’t just about slides or scripts. It’s about understanding the unspoken dynamics of a room and speaking to people with a confidence that feels natural, not forced.
Part of this pivot is to do more than just build an encyclopedia of great shows and information. I am offering personal coaching to those who want to improve their ability to present information in a presentation, a speech, or perhaps just presenting your ideas in front of a small but intimidating group. This coaching is for anyone who wants their next presentation to go from good to great. It starts with reaching out to me and setting up a simple, 15-minute conversation so we can explore this option more and see if it’s right for you. When you’re ready, please use this link: https://calendly.com/robjolles/15min
As for the podcast, it’s called, The Presentation Whisperer Show, and I’m gathering experts from all platforms that can shed light on the true art of speaking. You’ll hear from world-class professional speakers, master trainers, authors shaping big ideas, and everyday professionals who simply want to make their moments count. So that’s it. I’m not saying good-bye to the Blarticle® or you. I’m saying enjoy the catalogue of Blarticles® I’ll be sharing every other week, listen to them on Pocket Sized Pep Talks, follow me to The Presentation Whisperer Show, and jump on that calendar link if you want to up your game as a speaker.
