Throughout my life, like many other entrepreneurs, I’ve repeatedly made the mistake of choosing clever over clear, falling into a trap I call “The Something for Everyone Syndrome.” One of my latest journeys into this unwinnable war was with my podcast, Pocket Sized Pep Talks. Five and a half years ago, I fell in love with that name. I thought, “Who doesn’t want a pocket-sized pep talk? It’ll appeal to everyone!” It turns out, I was partially right. Five years and 500 episodes later, that podcast made it into the top 2% of downloads nationally. But with over 4.5 million podcasts to choose from, its “mystery niche” has stalled its growth.

That podcast will continue with a format change to provide true, inspirational stories; lesson learned.

I’m no longer asking, “Would everyone like this?” Instead, I’m asking, “Does my ideal audience light up when they hear this?” Introducing The Presentation Whisperer Show. Let me tell you why I chose this name, and what to expect in this podcast.

When you hear “Whisperer” used this way, I hope a few things come to mind.

  • Special insight. A whisperer isn’t just someone who knows the basics; they have a deeper, almost intuitive understanding of their subject. Like a horse whisperer, dog whisperer, or ghost whisperer, it suggests a unique ability to connect in ways others can’t.   I’ve spent over 40 years on stage as an actor, trainer, professional speaker, and even as a licensed and bonded live auctioneer. The world of presenting is in my blood.
  • Calm authority.  A whisperer guides, reassures, and teaches through trust, and does so with subtlety.  The word “calm” resonates with me, particularly with presentations, which can be emotional and intimidating for many people. I’ve trained speakers throughout my career in so many fields and situations: I’ve helped doctors, lawyers, real estate agents, teachers, artists… to name just a few of the professional areas I’ve worked with.
  • Personalized connection. I want this name to signal that listeners can expect help uncovering their own potential, and in learning tactics to make presentations interesting and engaging, and successful!

So, focusing now on my new podcast, The Presentation Whisperer, I am hoping that the name communicates that the show isn’t just about teaching presentation skills; it’s about mastering the unspoken art of connecting with audiences confidently in a way that feels natural, and almost effortless.

As for guests, I’m beyond excited about the list of guests already in cue. Sometimes you’ll hear from some of the best professional speakers on this planet!  They will be sharing unique, creative delivery techniques; ones that will surprise you because professional speakers are a unique breed of their own.

Sometimes you’ll learn from trainers who tend to work in smaller rooms for longer stretches of time. These are the people who have a unique ability to hold an audience’s attention for days at a time.  They are a hearty bunch, who will be on hand to share their tricks of the trade and trusted techniques.

Sometimes you’ll hear from those who are striving to make it to the big stages with big audiences, often authors building messages around their books. You’ll hear tips and ideas that will dramatically strengthen the way your workshop messages land.

Sometimes, you’ll hear from those who aren’t chasing a career on stage, but simply want to make the moments they’re given, count. I’m going to make sure we touch on smart, easy moves so you’ll be able to apply them effortlessly, and give powerful presentations.

I’ll even dedicate shows to presentations that aren’t working, and walk through ways to fix them. You’ll hear live coaching sessions that capture the transformation of both message and delivery in real time

So, if you’re looking for a show that appeals to everyone, you won’t find it here. I’ve learned my lesson and I’m focused on my niche. But if you want to hear professional speakers, trainers, and people who just want to make sure their message matters, tune in and get ready. It’s going to be one whale of a show!
